March is here and we are hoping that spring weather arrives soon! We are looking forward to blooming flowers on our campus and the return of soccer at recess. March is a very busy month at Holcomb. Make sure that you are in the know by checking our website for calendar events and checking your child's backpack for reminders from teachers. In this newsletter you find a list of important dates to be aware of.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Conferences will be held March 16th and 17th. This is a time to get together with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress, share information, and plan strategies to help your child finish the school year strong. Parents and teachers can be an exceptionally effective team if they communicate and work together to support student learning. Please make every effort to be on time. We appreciate hearing from you if you have a change of plans or will be late.
LOST AND FOUND
Everyday boys, girls and even adults are leaving their coats, jackets, sweaters, hats, and lunch boxes on the school grounds. Those items without names are picked up and brought to our lost and found located near the front office. If your child is missing something please come check our lost and found. Conferences will be a great time to look for lost items. Over spring break we will be donating any items left over.

KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE
Parenting kids who have access to so many different versions of technology can be difficult. Knowing how to ke
ep your child safe is important. Below you will find some great resources that give parent tips on how to help their child be safe while online.
CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH:
Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t. Either way, you are right.” This is so true and so worth passing on. In March we are focusing on having a positive attitude. How can we create a “can-do, will-try” attitude in our children? We can start by encouraging positive thinking and by creating an environment that nurtures children’s beliefs in their abilities. Having a positive attitude enables kids to take risks that will help them reach their potential. Teaching your child how to turn a negative attitude around helps to teach important coping skills that students will need in life.
PTA CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
As we begin a new year, we as a PTA are looking ahead to the 2016‐2017 school year. With the new
school year will come big changes within our PTA.Next year we will have the following PTA board member OPENINGS:
Each year the PTA supports our school in the following ways: Jogathon, Readathon, Field Day, Movie
Nights, Family Fun Nights, Fundraisers, Art Lit Fair, Book Fairs, Popcorn Fridays, and Staff Appreciation Week. To give you an idea of how beneficial a thriving PTA can be, this year alone we have raised approximately $17,424, installed a walking path in the field and brick path near the library, in the process of purchasing a projector for the gymnasium and laptops for March testing, successful Family Fun Nights and have been able to supply every teacher with additional money to support their
classroom. We need your help to continue this legacy. Without your help, Holcomb Elementary School will lose the benefits that the PTA has brought to the school for so many years.
If your time is limited and you are unable to commit to a board member position, consider sitting
on a committee for one of the PTA activities noted above. Sitting on a committee for a particular event would not involve running the entire event but instead would involve picking one area within that event to help with.
If you are interested in learning more about a position or in finding out how you can help at one of the PTA run events, please contact email@example.com.
If your child is going to miss school please call the Attendance Line 503-785-8083 and let us know.
The weather can change in an instant. Please dress your child in layers and send a coat just in case. We go outside to recess rain or shine!
