Happy New Year!
I would like to welcome everyone back from the winter break and wish you all a very Happy New Year! I am excited to see what the second half of the school year brings to the wonderful students and staff at Holcomb Elementary School!
As 2016 begins I want to ask our families to be mindful of re-establishing morning routines so that your children are in attendance and on-time each morning. Being on time and ready to learn helps to ensure that the rest of the day goes well for students. In addition to morning routines, we also ask our families to continue to be mindful of scheduling appointments. We recognize that there are times when an occasional early dismissal or late drop off is necessary for an appointment or urgent family need, however this loss of instructional time can affect a student’s academic achievement. Please make every effort to schedule appointments after school is released. Thank you for your support! Together we can provide our students with a quality educational experience that leads to increased levels of academic achievement.
FAMILY FOCUS FORUM I would like to extend a personal invitation to join me at the Family Focus Forum on January 30th. The Family Focus Forum is Oregon City’s premier (FREE!) family workshop event for families with students of all ages. The event includes both 60 minute and 90 minute workshops focusing on providing parents with information and tools that can help them navigate through their many roles and transitions - creating positive home, work and school environments where parents and kids flourish.
The Family Focus Forum also includes:
- A continental breakfast and full lunch;
- An informative and inspiring keynote address by Dr. Kathy Masarie;
- Over 25 workshops for parents, dealing with issues related to children of all ages;
- Exhibitor tables with local area resources for families and students;
- Free childcare for children aged 5-10 years.

BUS BEHAVIOR: If your child rides the bus please stress the importance of following the bus rules. The rules are simple: stay seated, use quiet voices, no eating or drinking, keep hands and feet to yourselves and follow the directions of the bus driver. Should there be a problem on the bus please let the bus driver. If it is a serious problem please let the principal know as soon as possible.
Recently there have been reports of unsafe behavior at bus stops prior to the bus picking students up and just after they are dropped off. If your child walks him/herself to the bus stop please review the following safety rules with them. Students should wait in the designated bus stop area. Students should not cross busy streets unless in a marked crosswalk or with the assistance of the bus driver stopping traffic.If you have any questions please let me know. Thank you for your help to keep our students safe!

WEATHER: This week we saw how quickly the weather can change. Rain! Snow! Ice! Sun! Here at Holcomb we go outdoors for recess! Only in extreme circumstances do we stay indoors. Students should come to school prepared for cold and rainy weather.
For school delay or closure information due to inclement weather please check the OCSD website (http://www.ocsd62.org/) or refer to the local radio/TV stations.
STANDARD RESPONSE PROTOCOL Student safety is our number one priority! One important way to ensure school safety is to have a plan of how we will respond when or if there is ever a safety incident at school. These incidents could include weather events, fire, accidents, intruders or other threats to student safety. Our school plans for and practices responding to such scenarios. Here are some resources to learn more about SRP.
The weather is now wet and cold! We do not have indoor recess. Please make sure that your child has a coat/jacket and that it is labeled with their name. We are happy to support students who may need assistance getting a coat. Please let us know if we can help.
In the case of inclement weather please refer to radio and TV stations or see the OCSD website for the most up to date information on school closure or delay.
