December Principal News

Welcome to December!

This month is full of excitement for our families, students and staff. The holiday season is the perfect time for all of us to teach our students the value of showing gratitude, the joy in generosity and the lasting impact of kindness. This month includes a long winter break from school. I urge parents and guardians to to use that vacation time to bond with your kids and to continue to encourage and support their learning. At conferences your child’s teacher shared with you the progress that your child has made so far and skills that they will need to develop to meet end of the year expectations. You may have noticed that our expectations for student achievement is high, particularly in Mathematics and Language Arts. There are many ways that you can support your child in meeting these expectations. You can read to or with your child everyday. You can highlight the mathematical skills needed when cooking your favorite recipes.  You can encourage writing skills by allowing your child to keep a journal or asking your student to write “thank you” notes to family and friends. The best way to teach your child is by example. Keep nurturing their brains so they are ready when they come back to school after the holiday break. Thank you for your continued support to ensure your child has school success.

SECRET SNOWFLAKES    In our school office you will find a flurry of snowflakes. Each snowflake represents a family or a child who is in need this holiday season. Please come take a snowflake, purchase a gift and bring it to school unwrapped.  These gifts will directly benefit kids in our own school. We are also accepting wrapping paper donations.

SOCK DRIVE     Just in time for those holiday sales, Holcomb Elementary PTA will be collecting new socks and underwear for the Clackamas County Clothes Closet!! Donation bins and Sock Tree will be in the main hallway when students return from break through December 16th. This will be a BOYS vs. GIRLS competition with the winning group having a special 15‐min recess!!  OUR GOAL: 1,000 SOCKS!!

CANNED FOOD DRIVE     Bring canned food, non-perishable food items, and packaged toiletry items to school to donate to our our food drive between December 1st and December 16th. The food items that we collect will go directly back into the Oregon City Community to benefit families in our own backyard.

In 2010, Oregon adopted higher K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. Because we raised the bar for what we expect students to know and be able to do, we have also changed the way we measure student progress through our state tests, known as Smarter Balanced. Parent resources, including forms and answers to frequently asked questions, are available on our district website at http://goo.gl/oYxmPs. Statewide assessments will begin in February.

  • The weather is now wet and cold! We do not have indoor recess. Please make sure that your child has a coat/jacket and that it is labeled with their name. We are happy to support students who may need assistance getting a coat. Please let us know if we can help.

  • In the case of inclement weather please refer to radio and TV stations or see the OCSD website for the most up to date information on school closure or delay.
